PEORIA - J. Howard Yates Jr., 70, of Peoria passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Chillicothe.
Howard was born on Sept. 22, 1943, in Evanston, Ill., to Jess Howard and Charlotte R. (Vavrik) Yates Sr. He married Sharon Oberholtzer on Nov. 30, 1963. He later married Diana Lynn Raymond on Aug. 9, 1968, in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. She preceded him in death on Oct. 14, 2011.
Howard is survived by his three sons, Tom (Kim) Yates and Daniel Yates, both of Cape Coral, Fla., and Kevin (Jennifer) Yates of Chillicothe; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his brother, Dr. Robert (Karin) Yates of Warrensburg, Mo.; his sister, Carol (Carl) Allen of East Peoria; his mother-in-law, Gertrude Tow of Bartonville; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Diana; and one infant son, Brian Keith.
Howard served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He then worked as a sales representative for several different companies, Rudkin-Wiley in the Air Shield Division, Merrill Lynch and Traders Realty, and was the director of guest services for the Peoria Chiefs baseball club. Howard retired on Aug. 30, 2010.
He was a member and served as president of the South-West Kiwanis Club, board member of the Boys and Girls Club of America, program chairman of the Board of Realtors, Northwest United Methodist Church member and administrative board member of Northwest UMC.
He was an avid golfer with a hole-in-one and an avid bowler with a 300 top score. He played the tenor saxophone in numerous dance and rock 'n' roll bands as well as the Bradley Friends & Family band. He sang in the church choir, coached on several of Kevin's baseball teams and was a Peoria Chiefs and Chicago Bears and Cubs fan.
Cremation rites will be accorded, and a visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at Northwest United Methodist Church, 3800 W. War Memorial Drive, Peoria, IL 61615. A memorial service for close friends and family will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Pastor Randy Douglass will officiate.
