John Higgs Obituary

FARMINGTON - John Louis Higgs, 73, of Farmington, Ill., passed away at 7:48 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at his residence.

He was born July 20, 1940, in Farmington to Louis Wilson and Lois B. (Gentle) Higgs. He married Barbara Ann Peoples on June 24, 1962, in Farmington.

She survives, along with two children, Mary Ann (Ron) Higgs Knutson of Batavia and Joseph Louis (Michelle) Higgs of Farmington; four grandchildren, Alec Joseph Higgs, Eric Scott Higgs, Alyssa Kate Knutson and Anna Kristine Knutson; two brothers, Ralph L. (Sherry) Higgs of Farmington and David L. (Carolyn) Higgs of Dunlap; and one sister, Kathleen L. (Kent) Kowal of Farmington.

He graduated from Farmington High School in 1958 and Western Illinois University in 1962.

John was a co-owner of Melgreen's Furniture in Farmington for more than 50 years.

He was vice president of the Bank of Farmington Board of Directors and Farmington Bancorp and served on the board for 37 years.

He also served in the Illinois National Guard.

He was a member of the Farmington Rotary, Farmington Masonic Lodge and the Farmington Fire Department for 44 years. He became an EMT in 1973 and, along with other charter members, worked with Dr. James Reed for the next 20 years creating and fine tuning central Illinois' finest rescue operation, known as Rescue 1100. He served as fire chief for nine years and then became a trustee for the Farmington Fire District until his retirement in 2009.

John enjoyed working at the family farm and spending time with his family, especially summer vacations in Eagle River, Wis.

The family would like to thank all of their extended family and friends for their prayers, and they would also like to express their appreciation to OSF Hospice for their tender care and support.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2014, at Anderson-Sedgwick Funeral Home in Farmington. The Rev. Chris Deacon of the Farmington Presbyterian Church will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2014, at the funeral home. Private burial will be in Trivoli Cemetery following the services.
