YATES CITY – Thomas "Tom" G. Staggs, 84, of Yates City, died at 5:10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at his home.
He was born at his Homestead in Shintown near Farmington, on December 9, 1932, to Claude and Ruth (Simpkins) Staggs.
He married Jo Ann Westbrook in Peoria on November 7, 1955. She survives.
Other survivors include five children, Sharon (Mike) Hicks of Stronghurst, Thomas Staggs II of Yates City, Steve (Lisa) Staggs of Yates City, Toni (Brian) Jurgensen of Maquon, and Tim Staggs of Bartonville; seven grandchildren, Sarah (Eric) Farwell, Jake (Jenn) Staggs, Erin Staggs, Kylee (Vince Bales) Staggs, Adam Staggs, Emily Staggs, and Zach Jurgensen; two great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Eloise Staggs; and life-long friends, Bob and Leona Grubb.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother, Florence Staggs, six brothers, and one sister.
Tom graduated from Roosevelt Military Academy and then entered the Navy serving on the U.S.S. Grand Canyon. He worked as a laborer for Caterpillar for 26 years, retiring in 1991, and was a bookkeeper at McKeighan Seed Company for ten years. Tom also enjoyed volunteering at St. Mary's Hospital in Galesburg for over 20 years. Tom was a member of the Douglas United Methodist Church, the Yates City Masonic Lodge #448, and the local American Legion.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2016, at 10:30 a.m., at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Elmwood with a two hour visitation the night before, Friday, December 30, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Masonic Rites will be held at the conclusion of the visitation at 8:00 p.m. Burial will follow the funeral service at Yates City Township Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Douglas United Methodist Church and MANNA (Meals on Wheels).
