Memorial services for Dessie M. Givens, 81, of Portales will be at 10:00 a.m., Sat., Oct. 19, 2013 at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Rev. Wesley McAfee officiating, assisted by Rev. John Combs. Cremation has taken place and burial will be in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery in Frederick, OK on Mon., Oct. 21, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Mexico Baptist Children's Home, the Gideons, or the .
Dessie Marie Givens was born Feb. 21, 1932, to Dessie Emma (Mark) and Wilbert "Bert" Grimes and passed from this life into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ at 7:04 p.m., Fri., Oct. 11, 2013. Dessie was the youngest of eleven brothers and sisters. Her father died when she was only six years old. Dessie experienced many hardships as she was growing up due to the fact that her mother had only a third grade education, and there were still four children at home. As a result, they lived with her other brothers and sisters. Dessie received her education in Ponca City, OK
At the age of 16, she married Donald Van Thomas. To this union were born two daughters, Mickey and Donna Jean. Mr. Thomas passed away on Dec. 21, 1960. She met the love of her life, and soul mate, Lee Dale Givens in Sept. 1962, and they were married on Dec. 18, 1962, in Blackwell, OK, and started a life of love, happiness, and adventure that continued throughout their marriage. To this union were born two sons that she had always wanted, Mike and Steve.
Dessie was saved and baptized at the Sunset Baptist Church in Ponca City, OK at the age of eight. She served her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ her entire life. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Portales, NM. During her lifetime, she served as church secretary, as a teacher for Sunday School teacher as well as in Vacation Bible School, and as head of the kitchen committee in Vista Hills Baptist Church in El Paso, TX and at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Portales. She was always ready to volunteer at church, served as a den mother and pack leader in Cub Scouts, worked with the PTA, and helped Dale in painting at the Baptist Children's Home and in various states. She had a special place for people who were in need. Dessie loved to joke and tease and have fun.
She is survived by Lee Dale Givens, her husband of almost 51 years of their home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mickey Davis of Portales and Donna and Richard Wilson of Atchison, KS; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Pat Givens of El Paso, TX and Steve and Joan Givens of Las Cruces, NM; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Willard Perkins of Houston, TX and Judy and Bill Parker of Denver, CO; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her brothers and sisters, and by a step-son, Dale Wayne Givens.
