Gilbert Esparsen Obituary
Gilbert Gregory Esparsen was born July 4, 1940, in Las Vegas, NM, to the home of Eloisa and Gregorio Esparsen and died very unexpectedly on December 24, 2011, in Portales. Mr. Esparsen worked in construction and in the mines for several years until 1969 when he moved to Portales. On June 18, 1970, he went to work in the Sanitation Department for the City of Portales, and when he retired in 2008 he was the Department Supervisor.
On July 21, 1962, in Las Vegas, he was married to Betty Deckard. Gilbert loved to spend time with his family, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed watching sports, especially boxing and the Denver Broncos. He was the type of man to take care of things. If anything was wrong with something he immediately wanted to see to it that it was fixed. He was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Esparsen of Portales; a son and daughter-in-law, Gilbert Esparsen, Jr. and his wife, Amber of Portales; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Marsha Esparsen of Portales, Gail Esparsen of Portales, Kim and Abel Viscaino of Clovis and Donna and Sean Harrison of Portales; 16 grandchildren, Joshua and Jacob Romero, Rachel (Travis Mead) Cox and Sydney (Tino Chavez) Cox, Alicia, Audrey, and Sierra Viscaino, Marissa Gallo, Juwan (Lanae Lopez) Gallo, Kaitlyn, Jayden and Emilee Harrison, and Christopher, Jonathan, Serynn and Asher Esparsen; three great-grandchildren, Jayclyn Gallo, Trae Mead and Elicio Chavez; a brother, Albert Esparsen of Santa Fe, NM; and four sisters, Mary Alvey of Las Vegas, NM, Sophie Quintana of Albuquerque, Frances Lucero of Las Vegas, NM and Genevieve Esparsen of Albuquerque.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Pat Esparsen and a sister, Carol Esparsen.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary of Portales, 575-356-4455.

Betty and family. You have our deepest sympathy on the death of your loved one. We know how important he was in your lives. Your relationship was quite special and while this makes the loss so very painful, we do believe that your closeness and warm memories will bring you comfort. To Betty and Family, Gilbert was a good friend, always ready with a smile or a joke. I knew him as a hard worker and as a smart man who loved his wife and family. He was proud of all of you. He will be missed greatly.

To my sweet Dad, Ohh how I'm gonna miss you so. My heart is so empty. You were such an amazing Dad you helped all your children no matter what the circumstances was. I'm gonna sorely miss seeing you sitting in your chair and getting your phone calls when you needed Sean to help you. I love you beyond words. Lord wrap your loving arms around me and my broken heart.
