Jose Garcia Obituary
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated for Jose Garcia, 75, of Portales at 1:00 PM, Friday, June 1, 2012, at St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales with Fr. Sotero Sena as celebrant. Interment of his remains will follow in Mission Garden of Memories Cemetery in Clovis.
Jose Cosme Garcia was born June 14, 1936, in Clovis to Alta (Chavez) and Frank Garcia and died May 28, 2012, in Portales. After graduating from high school, he served for eight years in the US Air Force as an assistant to the chaplains. In conjunction with his duties he was able to travel to many places in the world, and was even privileged to spend a night at the Vatican. Following his discharge, Jose returned to Clovis where he worked as a policeman. After completing a Bachelor's degree from Eastern New Mexico University, he began teaching at Clovis High School.
Jose was one of the first single males in the US to adopt. He adopted two sons, Joe and Mike, in 1971. Several years later he adopted another son, Scott. In 1973, he came to Portales and became Registrar at ENMU as well as teaching some classes while completing his Master's degree. In 1984, Jose moved to Hobbs where he was a Sociology professor at New Mexico Junior College. Two years ago he retired and returned to Portales. He was a member of the Catholic Church.
He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Gloria Garcia of Scottsdale, AZ, Joseph and Mila Garcia of Portales, and Scott and Cindy Henderson of Hobbs, NM; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Pete, Elias, Herman, Frank, and Sammy Garcia and four sisters, Flora Urioste, Mary G. Sandoval, Symphor Rivera, and Salomoure Swaboda.
