On Friday, June 22, 2012, Rebecca Ann Rauch Wood lost a brave two-year battle with colon cancer. Born on May 1, 1953, Becky was the second of three daughters to John L. and Lily Beck Rauch. Becky grew up in Pennsylvania, moving with her family to different churches where her father served as pastor. She graduated from Shippensburg University, began her teaching career in Virginia, and then moved to San Diego in the late 1970's.|
Music was important in Becky's life, and led her to her husband, Tony, whom she married in 1986. They met as members of a Gilbert & Sullivan Company, and later their entire family worked in theater together – Tony as stage manager, their son, Kevin, as a musician, daughter, Chrissy, as an actress, with Becky running the follow spot among other duties.
Becky was a devoted mother whose children meant everything to her. As an active member of Hope United Methodist Church in Rancho Bernardo, Becky built strong relationships with God and many close friends, including her Seasoned Sisters. Becky was an educator for more than three decades, most recently teaching in the Poway Unified School District since 1982. Her joy and dedication made a lasting, positive impression on her students, their families and her colleagues. She was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter UU in Poway, an international philanthropic educational organization devoted to supporting women's education. With her radiant smile and warm heart, her friends say that Becky was undeniably one of the most caring, giving people they have ever known.
Becky bore her illness with courage and grace, and when the time came, acceptance. Our memories of her intelligence, beautiful voice and love will endure.
Becky is survived by her husband, Anthony Robert Wood, a recent UCSD retiree; daughter, Christiana Lynne of Rancho Peñasquitos; father, John L. (Joann) Rauch; sisters, Colleen Kay Rauch (Jacob) Middour and Leanne Michelle Rauch (Luis) Martinez; niece, Haley Rauch Martinez; and nephew, Hunter Adam Martinez, all of Pennsylvania. In addition to her family, Becky is further survived by countless friends and former students whose lives she touched indelibly. Becky was preceded in death by her son, Kevin; her mother, Lily; and mother-in-law, Betty. Becky's strong faith that she would be reunited with her loved ones gave her great comfort in her final days.
A celebration of Becky's life will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2012, at Hope United Methodist Church, 16550 Bernardo Heights Parkway, San Diego, CA. Becky's wish was for attendees to wear colorful clothing to the celebration.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wood Meditation Garden at Hope United Methodist Church in Rancho Bernardo, or to the Educational Projects Fund at Chapter UU, PEO c/o Cathy Williams, 13149 Woodmont St, Poway, CA 92064.
