James "Jim" Irving Montgomery, Jr.

James "Jim" Irving Montgomery, Jr., 71, of Punta Gorda, FL, passed away on September 8, 2018. Jim was born on March 8, 1947 to James Sr. and Patricia Montgomery in Jacksonville, FL. He was a graduate of Landon Senior High School in Jacksonville, FL, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army also serving in the Reserves. Jim graduated from the University of South Florida in 1970 and moved to the area in 1978. He worked for U.S. Gypsum in New Orleans and was also the Vice President of Operations for the Donelson Group that oversaw the building of Fishermen's Village and Emerald Pointe. In 1985 he started Southwest Construction of Florida, Inc. and built custom homes in Charlotte County for over 30 years. He was past president of the Chamber of Commerce, an original member of the Conquistadors, and was past president of Rotary Club.

Jim was an avid golfer and fisherman. He loved watching football and spending time with his granddaughters.

Survivors include his children, April (Joseph Jr.) Schortz, James "Monty" Montgomery III, and Stephanie Ann (Travis) Winesett, all of Punta Gorda, FL; sister, Gail (Bob) Montgomery Courter of Jacksonville, FL; granddaughters Hailey Schortz, Peighton Schortz, and Sailor Winesett; and a niece, Grace Montgomery Hayes of Dallas, TX.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Friday, September 14th from 2-4PM with a service beginning at 3PM at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 9400 Indian Spring Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda, FL 33950. Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, Cemetery, and Crematory is handling arrangements.
