Henry A. "Hank" Jacoby
PORT CLINTON: Henry A. "Hank" Jacoby, 97, of Port Clinton, OH, passed away Thursday, February 07, 2013. He was born on December 13, 1915 in Wauseon, OH, the son of Carl and Katrina (Eukorn) Jacoby Sr.. On November 08, 1958, he married, Catherine "Katie" Herzog, and she survives.
He joined the civil defense unit in 1940 and was commissioned into the Sandusky Police Dept. on August 11, 1942. He was assigned to the first detective bureau in 1949 and established the filing system for the department. Hank made sergeant in 1951 and chief of detectives in 1962, under Sandusky Chief of Police, Robert W. Traver. He worked with Elliott Ness who was the safety service director of Cleveland, OH and assigned James Bensick who was the top agent for Mr. Ness and they worked organized crime for the area. Hank lectured and was assigned to the original crime unit where he wrote the book on Scientific Criminal Investigation for the Sandusky Police Dept, and organized the first School Boy Patrol picnic for Sandusky and Port Clinton.
He retired from the Sandusky Police Dept. on August 11, 1965 and was appointed Police Chief of Port Clinton, on October 17, 1966 by Mayor Gordon Cooper. In 1970 he established the first police school in the area and later assisted Father Roberts in starting a police school for Terra Tech College in Fremont. Hank became director of police training in Fremont and at the Sandusky Police academy. He organized the first detective bureau for Port Clinton and established the police school with the F.B.I.. Hank was the director of the North Star Regional Drug Enforcement unit and president of Project Info. N.R.A. Police School. He retired from the Port Clinton Police Dept. in 1985. Hank was recognized in the "Who's Who in the Midwest" from 1986 to 1987, for police training. He was the author of "Sandusky's Finest" as authentic police work of the period and was recognized by the National Assoc. of Treasury agents for work in organized crime. Hank was given the Senior Centurion Award by the Fraternal Order of Police and was on the police training staff for the N.R.A. at the matches at Camp Perry. He was the county chair for the Drug Awareness Programs.
Hank was an avid golfer and weight lifter. At one time he held the world's record for the leg press at the Toledo, OH, Y.M.C.A. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #17, Sandusky, OH and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #79 of Port Clinton. Hank was a co-owner of Fort Firelands. He received numerous awards from the N.R.A., the F.B.I and the Ohio Police Chiefs Assoc. Hank was a life member of the Ohio Police Chief's Assoc, Ohio Gun Collector's Assoc, N.R.A and the Police & Fire Retirees of Ohio. He was a member of the breakfast club at Trinity United Methodist Church.
Hank enjoyed his two grandchildren, Brynn & Brent Jacoby of Ottawa County, as he saw them almost every day.
Survivors include, wife, Catherine "Katie" Jacoby of Port Clinton; son, Alan (Cindy) Jacoby of Oak Harbor; daughters, Barbara Fox of Sandusky and Kathleen Cote of Columbus; eight grandchildren; four freat-frandchildren; four freat-great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Hank was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Carl Jacoby Jr. and Bill Jacoby; and sister: Bertha Barker.
Visitation will be 3-6pm, Monday, February 11, 2013 in the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Clinton, OH, where there will be an F.O.P. service at 6:00pm. Funeral services will be conducted by Father Mark Herzog at 10:00AM, Tuesday, February 12, 2013 in the funeral home. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton.
