Wortman, Dale - Lucasville
DALE WORTMAN LUCASVILLE—W. Dale Wortman, 72, passed away at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio, on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at 1:45 p.m. He was born in Zanesville, OH on May 25, 1942. He was the oldest son of, and preceded in death by his parents, Walter Combs and Rachel (McCormick) Wortman. He is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Kay (Newsom), Lucasville, OH, whom he married on March 27, 1966, in Beverly, OH; his devoted daughter, Desra, Lucasville, OH; brother, Dean (Karen), Conesville, OH; sister, Doris, South Euclid, OH; sister-in-law, LaTrelle (Dan) Ellis, Devola, OH; several nieces, nephew, aunts, uncles, cousins, and the beloved family pet, Zoé. Dale was a 1961graduate of Malta-McConnelsville High School, McConnelsville, OH, and 1965 graduate of Ohio University, Athens, OH, with a Bachelor of Science degree. He obtained teacher certification in Health, Math, Physical Education, and Driver's Education. While attending Ohio University, he assisted with coordinating intramural sports, played for one year on the Bobcat football team, called square dances and drove a semi-truck for Shelly and Sands, Inc.. As an undergraduate, Dale also participated in a try-out session, as a place kicker, with the Dallas Cowboys. Mr. Wortman was a dedicated supporter of the Valley Local Schools. Dale was a past member and President of the Valley Local School Board; past member and President of the Valley Local Athletic Boosters; he served as scoreboard and time clock operator for the Valley Indians Football team for thirty-five years, including time spent providing maintenance and upkeep of the scoreboard throughout the nineteen-seventies and eighties; and he was a Little League umpire. He also served on the Valley Township Zoning Board of Appeals for several years. Dale was a loyal Valley Indians fan and always looked forward to attending the various school activities and sporting events with his family and life-long friends. Mr. Wortman was employed in the insurance profession for over twenty-nine years until his retirement in 1995. He was a Safety Specialist and Prevention Loss Specialist, Sales Manager, and Agent with the Nationwide Insurance Company and responsible for the Lancaster, OH, Charleston, WV, and Cincinnati, OH areas respectively. While working for the Nationwide Insurance Company as a Safety Specialist, Dale was responsible for writing and developing training materials to be presented to his peers regarding the inspection of insured facilities and how to successfully make recommendations for improvements that could prevent claims. Mr. Wortman was also employed by the Portsmouth Insurance Agency, Portsmouth, OH, until his retirement in 1995, where he served as President, Majority Stockholder and Agent. Dale was a Past President of the Portsmouth Life Underwriters Association and Portsmouth Area Association of Independent Insurance Agents. Dale was raised by community-minded, Christian parents and as such devoted his life to helping others. He was a loyal and dedicated member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church (EUMC), Lucasville, OH, for forty-five years and served the church and community in numerous capacities. Dale was a certified Lay Speaker for the United Methodist Church and served as Lay Leader at EUMC for twenty-three years. During this time, he was invited to speak at other churches on more than sixty different occasions. He delivered eulogies, baptized members, conducted presentations, taught Sunday School, served as President of the Fellowship Breakfast-where he coordinated speakers for over sixteen years-and made over 3,400 hospital, skilled nursing facility, and home visits on behalf of the church. Dale was a leader and driving force behind several church traditions, such as: the Golden Sunday luncheon that honored members married for 50 years or more, Flower Sunday, Fall and Spring Community Music Festivals, Fall Carnival, arranging for special music during the summer months, and working as shift leader for over eighteen years in the church food booth at the Scioto County fairgrounds. He worked diligently with other members of the church to remodel walls, floors, ceilings, heating and cooling ducts, wiring, and remove old heating units in the fellowship hall, nursery, and food pantry. Dale served for several years on various boards of the The West Ohio Conference, such as the Equitable Salaries Commission for eight years, where he traveled to and from Springfield, OH, on behalf of the church. All those who knew Dale were also aware that he truly enjoyed serving others and being a long-time member of the EUMC Leadership Team. Mr. Wortman's devotion to his community also included being an active member and Past President of the Portsmouth Kiwanis Club. He was chairperson of the Kiwanis Chopin Piano Competition for eleven years and Kiwanis Classical Vocal Competition for two years. Other community involvement included being asked to become a member of the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility Community Liaison Committee where he was actively involved for eight years. Woodworking and reading were two of Dale's hobbies. After his Uncle Frank McCormick taught him how to woodwork, many handcrafted projects were created. Mr. Wortman used his talents to build a model of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, which continues to be on display in the church's historical records room. Various woodworking projects included crafting canes, crosses for EUMC, Lucasville, OH, and McKendree Church, McConnelsville, OH, toothpick holders, jewelry, and furniture made with inlaid wood from around the world; building a coat rack for the Valley football stadium; building dog houses, quilt and coat racks, handrails, veteran flag and memorial displays and much more. Dale had a great sense of humor and always had an interesting story to share that usually taught a life lesson. He often joked that he could fix anything if he could build the new item from wood. He could easily recall family history and share any sporting statistic, sometimes even better than eye-witnesses. Since 1968, Dale was a steadfast Cincinnati Bengals fan and enjoyed attending the games with his long-time friends, while sitting in his front row, season ticket holder seat. Dale often said,"the best thing you can chisel in a rock to commemorate me is simply the phrase 'He Cared." He will be sadly missed by his wife, daughter, family, and friends. Visitation will be on Sunday, May 3, at the Valley Middle School, Lucasville, OH, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and one hour before the funeral services. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, May 4, at the Lucasville Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Lucasville, OH, at 1 p.m.. Burial services will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date at McKendree UMC Cemetery, McConnelsville, OH. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of W. Dale Wortman to the Lucasville Fire and EMS, C/O Teri Horton, Fire Chief, PO Box 595 Lucasville, Ohio 45648. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the McKinley Funeral Home, Lucasville, OH.
