Benita Canter


PORTSMOUTH - Benita M. Canter, 91, of Portsmouth, died Sunday, December 8, 2013, at SOMC Hospice.

She was born May 7, 1922, at Portsmouth, the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Montavon Walter. She was a life long member of St. Mary Catholic Church, a graduate of St. Mary High School, and a former employee of Selby Shoe Company and Mercy Hospital. She was President of Catholic Ladies of Columbia and a member of St. Joseph Monastery Women's Club, and her favorite hobbies were playing canasta and quilting.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Canter Sr.; two brothers, Paul Walter and Albert Walter; and two sisters, Eugenia Walter and Rosemary Hammond. Surviving are her children, Mary Anne (Ervin ) Bobst of Portsmouth, Earl (Kristy) Canter Jr. of Lucasville, Joseph Canter of Portsmouth, Charles (Nancy) Canter of Portsmouth; her grandchildren, Erin, Brian, Margaret, Angela, Ginny, and Alicia; her great-grandchildren, Christopher, Ashley, Jeremy, Haley, Emalee, Ethan, and Nathan; her sister Mercedes Werner of Cleveland; her brother-in-law, Alonzo Canter; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Adams, Romaine Caudill and Marcella Mounts.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, December 12, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Church in Portsmouth, with Rev. Adam Streitenberger officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Melcher Funeral Home in Portsmouth. Recitation of the Rosary will be 8 p.m. Wednesday at Melcher Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SOMC Hospice or St. Mary Catholic Church.
