PORTSMOUTH - Betty Apel, 81, of Portsmouth, Ohio, died Sunday, October 27, 2013, at Hill View Healthcare surrounded by her family. She was born September 28, 1932, in Portsmouth to the late William Russell and Betty Bush Russell.
Betty was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church, and a teacher at Notre Dame High School from 1970 to 1997. As a journalism teacher, she was very proud of the weekly student newspaper "The Highlight" of which she was the advisor. She was also the former society editor of the Portsmouth Daily Times and the Delaware Gazette.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Glenn Russell, and a brother-in-law, Otto Apel, III.
Betty is survived by her husband of 57 years, William F. L. Apel; two daughters, Molly (Martin) Glockner of Portsmouth and Margaret (Robert) Miller of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Martin Joseph Glockner, Jr., Anne Margaret Glockner and Mollie Alaine Miller; several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, David Wayne Apel; and sister-in-law, Clare Claudia Grossman.
Betty was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
A private memorial service was held Monday, October 28, 2013, at F.C. Daehler Mortuary Company in Portsmouth.
