DAVID A. BARKER

PORTSMOUTH — David A. Barker, 73, of Portsmouth, a devout Christian, has died June 23, 2014 at his residence from complications of mesothelioma, due to asbestos exposure.

David was born on October 29, 1940 the son of the late Jesse and Eleanor Barker. He attended Christ Community Church

where he personally requested Pastor Ralph Clay to officiate at his funeral. He served in the US Navy from 1958 to 1962

and the US Navy Reserve from 1962 to 1968. While serving on the USS Cony DDE 508 he earned the Navy Expedition Medal, issued for opposed landing on hostile soil for operations in the Bay of Pigs Invasion.

David served his fellow veterans for the past 38 years as an award winning Veterans Service Officer. He was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame in November of 2005.

He was a member of Salina Lodge 27 in Malden, West Virginia and a York Rite Mason of the Portsmouth Bodies. He was a

life member of AMVETS, American Legion, DAV, and the VFW.

He leaves behind his loving wife Barbara Barker and two daughters at home Kayla Barker and Corrin Barker; two daughters residing in West Virginia Rebecca Dillard and Katherine George; two stepsons Richard Steele (Rachel) of Portsmouth and James Bradley Edgington (Angel) of Gainesville, Florida; his grandchildren Brittani Cameron (RJ), Brandon Steele, Tabitha Steele, Noah Steele, Cyruss Edgington, Daniel White, Cassie White, Jennifer Rutherford, Sammie Rutherford, Allie Rutherford, Jason George, Elizabeth George; five great-grandchildren; his brother JC Barker (Barbara) of South Carolina; sisters Jessica Feazell, of Orlando, FL, Deborah McDougall (Pete) of Charleston, WV; and a beloved niece Elizabeth Magaw.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Melcher Funeral Home with Pastor Ralph Clay officiating.

Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. Friends may call at Melcher Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with Masonic Services 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Funeral Home.
