David "Dave" Counts

David Scott "Dave" Counts, 46, of McDermott, died unexpectedly on August 1, 2013, at Southern Ohio Medical Center.

Born on October 29, 1966, in Portsmouth, the son of Bernard V. and Peggy A. Counts, he was also preceded in death by brother, Bernard V. Counts Jr. ; mother-in-law, Connie Bennett; brother-in-law, Dr. Robert Tubb.

Dave graduated with Honors from Northwest High School - Class of 1985 and had attended Shawnee State University.

Dave was a volunteer fireman with Union Township. He was a member of Millwright Local 1519 and worked as a certified welder. He was most recently employed at Shawnee Animal Clinic working closely with his wife and two sisters. He was a lifelong farmer and hunter. He was a man with many talents. He was an amateur butcher and a gifted chef. David was born and raised on the Counts Family Farm in McDermott and still worked and maintained the daily operations there. The only thing that made him happier than driving his John Deere tractor was when someone asked him for help with a project. He could do anything and was always willing to jump in to help with a smile on his face.

He is survived by wife, Michell Counts of 14 years and soul mate of 20 who he married on October 2, 1999; siblings, Shari Tubb of Springboro, Ohio, Capt. Rick Counts (Charlene) of Las Vegas, Nev., Lynn Counts of McDermott, Ohio, Dr. Gail Counts of Portsmouth, Ohio, Cathy Strickland (Brian Gahm) of Lucasville, Ohio, Dr. Holly Counts (Shana) of Dayton, Ohio; stepchildren, Shellie Bennett and T.J. Adams; grandchildren, Devin, Dylan and Madi; and 17 nieces and nephews. He was also survived by his beloved 4 legged friends and companions on the farm Scrappy, Buddy, Millie and Tinkerbell (Stinker).

Dave was deeply loved by his family and friends and was adored by his three grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him, including the clients, pets and co-workers at Shawnee Animal Clinic. Dave was such an integral part of the care and compassion of the practice. He was everyone's rock and will be irreplaceable.

A Celebration of Life will be held at noon Monday, August 5, 2013, at the ADKINS-BRANT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth. The family will receive friends at Adkins-Brant Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday and one hour prior to the service on Monday. A memorial service will be held at the Counts Family Farm at a later date.

Dave's legacy lives on with his gift of life through donation. (include infinity symbol)

In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Sierra's Haven for New and Used Pets or to Bernie V. Counts Jr. Scholarship Fund through the Scioto Foundation.
