Don Federico Mersiel

Don Federico Mersiel, 73, of West Portsmouth, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013, at the SOMC Hospice Center. He was born April 23, 1940, in Seattle, WA, a son of the late Augustine Federico and Lilla Glenn Jones Mersiel. Don was a retired 20 year U.S. Navy veteran having served in the Vietnam War, at the Pentagon and on board the USS Independence. Don was a member of the Minford Church of the Nazarene where he taught Sunday School. He also was a Heartland Hospice volunteer, a hospital chaplain, an ordained pastor in the Freewill Baptist Church, a former pastor at Harvest Chapel Church in Sciotoville and a member of the Sons of Harmony Hospice band. Don also worked as an insurance agent for Western-Southern and the Franklin Life Ins. companies. He also loved his pets.

Don was preceded in death by his first wife Donna Kathryn Burke Mersiel on Sept. 25, 1996, whom he married in Wheelersburg on June 16, 1963. He is survived by his second wife, Deborah Sue Huffman Mersiel, whom he married Jan. 3, 1997, in New Boston.

Also surviving Don are his son Doug (Joyell) Mersiel of Sciotodale; his daughters, Danielle (Jon) Evans of Chillicothe, Deborah Joy Mersiel and Kristina Nicole Hall both at home; two stepsons, Thomas Alan (Kari) Brookbank of Heath, Benjamin Huffman (Amy Jones) Colburn of Columbus; grandchildren, Shawn-Douglas Mersiel, Donna-Marie Mersiel, Grace E. Evans; step-grandchildren, Kayli Brookbank, Tyler Brookbank and his step-sister Robin Pierce of Tillamook, OR. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Chantal D. Mersiel.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Minford Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Mark Bales officiating. The family will receive friends at the RALPH F. SCOTT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth, Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the Minford Church of the Nazarene from noon until the funeral hour on Thursday. Interment will in the Arlington National Cemetery with military honors at a date to be announced.

Honoring Mr. Mersiel's service to our nation, the flag of the U.S. Navy will be flown at the funeral home on Wednesday and Thursday.
