HAROLD BURTON, 86
PORTSMOUTH – Harold E. Burton, 86, of Portsmouth, died Thursday March 13, 2014, at SOMC Hospice with his family by his side.
He was born December 12, 1927, in Portsmouth to the late Rev. Ernest and Grace Ramey Burton.
Harold was a WWII veteran of the United States Army, then worked for Adams Bakery, and finally retired from the N&W Railroad as a Tower Operator and Ice House Foreman after 35 years of service.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Portsmouth, Portsmouth Eagles, and American Legion Post #23.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Harold E. "Ed" Burton Jr.; a daughter, Brenda Lou Burton; a granddaughter, Alisha Brooke Stamper; and a brother, Ernest Burton Jr.
Harold is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Nye (Kim) of Rubyville and Julie Martin (Mike) of Charleston, WV; six grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Harold is also survived by four sisters, Thelma Wallace (Harry) of Michigan, Norma Smith of Portsmouth, Rosalie Johnson of Portsmouth, and Polly Cole (Buddy) of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Melcher Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Kim Nye officiating. Interment will follow at Bennett Cemetery in Minford with graveside military rites provided by the American Legion James Dickey Post #23. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 p.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to SOMC Hospice.
