Warren "Jack" Hehl, 84, of Lucasville, passed away Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 28, 1929, in Portsmouth, a son of the late Arthur and Winifred Price Hehl.
Jack was a retired Distribution and Inspection Operator for Goodyear Atomic with 34 years of service, a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, and a 1947 Portsmouth East High School graduate.
Jack had a passionate love for children, especially the needy. His joy in life was being chairman of the shoe committee for the Lucasville Kiwanis Club. He provided and fitted hundreds of children with new shoes. He was known by many as "Jack the shoe man". He was also a member of the Lucasville Civic Club, and a member of Christ's Community Church in Portsmouth where he was an usher and greeter for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Juyon Cunningham Hehl, whom he married June 15, 1956, in Sciotoville; three sons, Bruce Hehl of Lexington, Ky., Todd Hehl of Lucasville, and Thom Hehl of Lexington, Ky.; three grandchildren, Amber Hehl, Hannah (Jeff) Gaffin, and Nathan (Chelsa) Hehl; soon to be one great-grandchild, Raden Zay Gaffin; one brother, Jerry Hehl of Utica; three sisters, Alice Trnka of Dayton, Louise Cooper of Hamilton, and Janet Sue Plantholt of Hermosa, S.D.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Vickie Jo Hehl at birth; two brothers, William Arthur Hehl and Ralph Vincent; and three sisters, Harriet Rine, Rosemary Forto, and Patricia Bybee.
A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at Christ's Community Church in Portsmouth under the leadership of his sons and assisted by the Christ Community family.
The family requests no flowers. Jack would say, "Let's buy some kids some new shoes." Memorial contributions may be made to the Lucasville Kiwanis Club Shoe Committee, c/o Gary Crandall, 1414 Cook Road, Lucasville, OH 45648.
