Mary L. Brooks
Mary L. Brooks, 93, died Thursday, August 29, 2013, at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, Ohio.
She was born August 22, 1920, in Portsmouth to the late Walter Henry Coyle and Nellie Mae Hahn Coyle. She graduated from PHS in 1938 and proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as one of the first Waves. She was a member of James Dickey Post 23 American Legion and VFW #3714.
Mary resided on Brant Avenue in Portsmouth for 47 years, followed by four years at Hill View Retirement Center. At the time of her death she was a resident of the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, Ohio.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Albert L. Brooks, whom she married in 1946; and a brother, Richard (Bessie) Coyle.
She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia (Vernon R.) Brooks Payne of Gahanna, Ohio; one grandson, Christopher Brooks Payne of New Albany, Ohio; one brother, Max E. (Marjorie) Coyle of Wyoming, Ohio; and one sister, Helen (Vance) Coyle Bakeman of Traveler's Rest, South Carolina, and beloved nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at Memorial Burial Park. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Honor Detail, James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday at F.C. Daehler Mortuary Company in Portsmouth.
