Robert W. Tieman


PORTSMOUTH-Robert W. Tieman, Sr., 91, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Southern Ohio Medical Center. A native of Portsmouth, he was born February 4, 1923 to the late William G. Tieman and Rosella Shiveley Tieman.

He was manager of Midland Grocery, where he was employed 42 years, after which he became secretary/treasurer of Portsmouth Retail Merchants. He was a US Army veteran, having served in the European Theater during World War II, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church, a Mason, and the American Legion.

A member of Kiwanis, he was proud of his 54 years of perfect attendance. He was one of the longest serving secretaries in the club. He was a past president of the Portsmouth Kiwanis; and a past Lt. Governor of District 9 International Kiwanis. He had been awarded the Kiwanis Hixson award for outstanding service to his church and community.

He served his family, church, country and community with love all of his life. He will be missed.

Married forever to Helen L. Payne Tieman on August 6, 1944, who preceded him in death October 24, 1996. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by five sisters, Nell Freeland, Freda Apel, Lillian Hobstetter, Ida Meyers and Wilma Canter.

He is survived by sons, Robert W. (Jeanie) Tieman, Jr. of Lucasville, Gary (Linda) Tieman, of McDermott; grandchildren, Scott Tieman, Amy Tieman Mullens, Shane Tieman, Clark Tieman, JoAnna Shaffer, Nathaniel Hoover-Tieman and Jennifer Bloomfield; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014 at F. C. Daehler Mortuary Company in Portsmouth with Rev. Tom Charles officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8p.m. Friday at Daehlers, and also one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park with graveside military rites conducted by the Honor Detail of James Dickey Post 23 American Legion.
