WEST PORTSMOUTH-Carl Louis Shaffer, 77 of West Portsmouth, died Friday June 20, 2014 at SOMC Hospice Center. He was born February 11, 1937 in Portsmouth to the late Clyde and Audrey Shaffer.
A lifetime farmer, he also worked at General Telephone. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. For over 25 years, he served as a 4-H Club Advisor initially for the Baby Beef Bucket Brigade and later the Almost Everything 4-H Clubs. He also served multiple terms on the Scioto County Farm Bureau Board and was an avid fan of his grandsons' sports teams.
Along with his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years Patsy Ann Essman Shaffer. Carl is survived by his children Mark and Nancy Seger of Marysville and Jason and Natalie Shaffer of West Portsmouth; his grandchildren Garrett and Brady Seger and Coleman and Georgia Shaffer as well as his in-laws Paul and Norma Euton, Jim and Mary Carolyn Longshore, Robert and Sue Essman, George Essman and Lewis and Debbie Essman.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Monday, June 23, 2014 at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth with J.D. Stevens officiating and interment will be in Scioto Burial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8:00 PM on Sunday and one hour prior to the service on Monday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the James Cancer Hospital or SOMC Hospice.
