GENE HAMILTON

C.E. "Gene" Hamilton passed away on August 12, 2014. His strong will to live, along with the dedication of his family and friends at his side, carried him through a long illness.

Gene was Born April 13, 1925 in Portsmouth, Ohio the eldest son of Troy Hamilton and Julia Miller.

He served his country proudly in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. At the end of the war he returned to the Portsmouth area where he met and married the love of his wife, Fledra. The couple moved to Phoenix, Arizona where their son Lonnie Hugh (now deceased) was born in 1948. The couple then moved to Tucson where Gene got his start in real estate. Gene opened his own real estate office and added broker and mortgage broker to his long list of accomplishments. He helped shaped the landscape of Tucson in the 60's and early 70's with his numerous real estate development projects, and as a recognized leader in the industry, was active in the formation of the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) in town.

Outside of his successful professional life, Gene was a committed volunteer. Known for his dedication to the community, Gene gave his time tirelessly to numerous organizations including Tucson Lodge #4–F&AM and the Scottish Rite of Tucson. Gene served as Potentate of the Sabbar Shrine Temple in 1980, as Director of the Royal Order of the Jesters #169 and was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Elks Lodge. He was also instrumental in raising an endowment for the Square & Compass Children's Clinic during his time as President and member of the board of directors. He dedicated hundreds of hours to helping children with disabilities to receive necessary medical care.

Gene had a zest for life. He was the life of the party, always up for doing something fun, and known for his sharp sense of humor. Gene was a dedicated husband, father, uncle and a generous and caring friend. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, dancing with his wife Fledra, listening to country music and spending time with his many friends.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years Fledra Patton Hamilton and his daughter Fonda Hamilton-Insley, both of Tucson. He is also survived by his nieces, Debbie (Bob) Fraley, Avis (Tom) Adkins, Janae (Mike) Kemery, Anne Marie Hamilton; and nephews, Jack (Kathy) Fannin and Michael (Jodi Cranston) Hamilton.

Gene will be laid to rest Sunday, August 17 at noon, with visitation at 11 a.m. at East Lawn Cemetery 5801 East Grant Road, Tucson. A reception will follow at 2 p.m. at Sabbar Shrine Temple.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Square & Compass Children's Clinic.
