PORTSMOUTH — John Sherman Jewell, 92, of Portsmouth, died Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at his residence. He was born March 13,1922 at Firebrick, Kentucky, the son of the late William and Martha Jewell.

John was retired from the City of Portsmouth Water Filtration Plant and was a World War II veteran having served in the Coast Guard, Merchant Marines and was a Navy Navigator. His favorite hobbies were playing his electric guitar and hunting.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Hughes Jewell; one son, John Jewell; three brothers, William Jewell Sr., Hobert Jewell McIntosh and Charles Jewell; two sisters, Emma Windsor and Anna Mae Bentley.

Surviving are his children, Vina (Johnnie) Colley of McDermott, Michael Jewell of McDermott, Everett Jewell of Pond Run, and Randy (Daphne) Jewell of Richmond, Kentucky; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren.

The family would like to give special thanks to his caregiver Thomas Reed and his other care givers and SOMC Hospice.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 22, 2014 at Melcher Funeral Home, with Rev. Peter Michael officiating. Burial will be at Scioto Burial Park with Military Graveside Rites by James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. Friends may call at Melcher Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2014.
