Joseph Henson Sr.

Joseph Michael Henson Sr., 88, of Springfield, formerly of Portsmouth, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ passing peacefully in his sleep on Monday, September 2, 2013.

He was born June 3, 1925, at Portsmouth, the son of the late Joseph and Wilda McFarland Henson. He served our country in the United States Navy during World War II serving in Okinawa and the Korean War. He was a member of Northridge Vineyard Church, Volunteer of Service Opportunity for Older People, Servants On Wheels Every Ready, Christian Appalachian Project, Right to Life, Friends of Tabasaran and the Emmaus Community.

Joe retired from Goodyear Atomic Corporation after 30 years service and was an avid golfer and runner and later in life worked at the Reid Golf Course.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Lee (Boyer) Hawke Henson of 22 years; a daughter, Mary Helen (Tom) Peach of Portsmouth; three sons, Joseph M. (Cathy) Henson Jr. of North Canton, Patrick T. (Kathy) Henson of Palm Beach, Florida, and Christopher J. (Teresa) Henson of Clifton, Virginia; four stepsons, Kevin (Lynn) Hawke of Springfield, Daniel (Julie) Hawke of Marion, Kerry (Arlene) Hawke of Springfield and Matthew ( Jenni) Hawke of DeGraff; 12 grandchildren, nine stepgrandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Andy Henson, Steven Henson, Peter Henson and Jack Henson; one sister, Mary Lumbard; and his first wife, Rose E. (July) Henson.

Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, September 6, 2013, at Melcher Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Rev. Joe Bruch officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. Friends may call at Melcher Funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
