PAUL F. NELSON

SCIOTOVILLE – Paul F. Nelson, 83, of Sciotoville, Ohio, died at Southern Ohio Medical Center on February 2, 2014.

Born Jan. 29, 1931, in the hospital at Washington, Iowa, he was a son of the late George W. Nelson and Mabel Godwin Nelson.

A 1949 graduate of Washington High School, he enlisted in the Air Force in early 1951 and served four years, including 10 months and five days in Korea.

He enrolled at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio in 1955, graduating in 1960 with a degree in business administration and public relations.

He worked at the Portsmouth Daily Times for 36 years, serving as reporter, photographer and columnist. Toward the end of his career he covered mainly government and politics. For a portion of his career he was on call 24 hours a day.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Peggy Hood Nelson, a registered nurse, after a battle with cancer.

He was a member of the Sciotoville Christian Church, where he served as a deacon and later as an elder for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys M. Johnson Nelson, whom he married in 1996; three daughters, Catharine Ann Yates of Lexington, Ky., Susan Arlene Lawrence of Wheelersburg, Ohio, and Nancy Carol Pack of Lexington, Ky. All three are registered nurses. He is also survived by four stepdaughters; Mara Ballard, Laura Harward, Karen Leedom, and Jane Johnson, and by nine grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

A Celebration of Life will be held on February 8, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Sciotoville Christian Church.
