PORTSMOUTH — Richard E. "Dick" Hopkins Jr., 86, passed away Sunday, October 6, 2013, at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. Dick was born June 5, 1927 in Portsmouth, Ohio, a son of the late Richard E. and Rachel Hopkins.

Dick was married to Virginia E. "Ginny" Hopkins, the love of his life, for 63 years. A long-time teacher and coach, Dick graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1945, served in the U.S. Navy, earned a bachelor's degree in education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and a master's degree from the University of Illinois. His first job was teaching at Portsmouth High School where he also served as an assistant basketball and head baseball coach. In 1957 Dick moved to Grandview Heights, a Columbus suburb, as head basketball and baseball coach. He returned to Portsmouth in 1970 as Director of Physical Education and Athletics and also served as a scout for the Philadelphia Phillies.

In 1975 Dick was named head basketball coach where he guided the Trojans to two district and regional titles and a 63-62 victory over Cleveland Cathedral Latin in the 1978 Class AA state title game which allowed Dick to join his father, Richard "Red" Hopkins, as the only father/son coaches to win state championships at the same school in Ohio history (Red's team won the 1931 big-school state championship). Dick's 1979 team was the 1979 Class AA Associated Press poll champion, and his 1980 team advanced to the state title game before falling to Hamilton Ross, 45-44.

Dick was a member of the PHS Hall of Fame, Ohio Basketball and Baseball coaches halls of fame, the Grandview Heights Hall of Fame, and received the 2003 Naismith Meritorious Service Award from the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Dick was also a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church and a member of American Legion Post 23.

In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by a sister, Rachel Hopkins O'Rourke, and a grandson, Thomas Christian Hopkins.

He is survived by a sister, Martha Hopkins Miller; three sons, Rick (Cindy), Tom (Lynn), and David (Gayle); three grandchildren, Katie Hopkins, Emily Hopkins and Annie Hopkins; a step-granddaughter, Sara (Trent) Fife and one step-great-granddaughter, Addie Fife.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church in Portsmouth, with the Rev. Evan Fisher officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the Hopkins-Fultz Scholarship Fund c/o The Scioto Foundation, P.O. Box 911, Portsmouth, OH 45662.

Dick was an avid sports fan, with a sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor, but most importantly, he was a greatly beloved Father and Pawpaw and he will be dearly missed. May he rest in peace.
