PRINCETON, WV - Elwood Edward Vaughn Sr., 86, of 1204 N. Walker Street in Princeton, WV, died Saturday, December 14, 2013, at Princeton Community Hospital. Born April 2, 1927, in Russell, KY, he was the son of the late Denver Vaughn and Sarah Elizabeth Bentley Vaughn. Elwood was retired from the U.S. Navy Reserves and was a former foreman with Marion Power Shovel Company in Marion, OH. He was of the Baptist faith and had been a resident of Princeton for the past year moving here from Marion, OH. During his military career Elwood faithfully served his country during World War ll in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 and in the Navy Reserve from 1947 to 1952. He re-entered the military enlisting in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1963 and the U.S. Army Reserves from 1965 to 1968 before transferring to the U.S. Navy Reserves where he served until his retirement in 1987.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, William H. Vaughn. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Norma Jean James Vaughn of Princeton; one son, Elwood E. "Wood" Vaughn Jr. and wife Janet of Princeton; one daughter, Kathryn Vaughn Craven and husband Col. Robert Craven of Honolulu, HI; three grandchildren, Seth Aaron Vaughn and wife Ashley of Princeton, Evangeline Vaughn Painter and husband Nathan of Cool Ridge, WV, and Miles Vaughn and wife Chelsea of New Castle, VA; two great-grandchildren, Kathryn Grace Vaughn and Andrew Corbet Dillo Vaughn; and two sisters, Kathryn Evans Sanford and husband Howard of Portsmouth, OH, and Louise Vaughn Ratliff of Columbus, OH.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, December 28, 2013, at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Scott Sears officiating. Burial will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, at a later date. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until the service hour on Saturday.
