Howard Lee Newton, 79, of Portsmouth, died, Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Southern Ohio Medical Center. He was born on August 22, 1934, in Portsmouth, the son of the late Earl DeRoy and Wilhelmina Cooper Newton. Howard was also preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Tipton; three brothers, Earl, Paul and Roy Newton; and one sister, Wilma Newton.

He was an Army Veteran, a member of the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion and had worked at Custom Carpet as an installer, was retired from AK Steel and had also worked for Scioto County Water Works.

Howard is survived by his wife, Helen Ruth Kemp Newton, who he married, June 14, 1985; three sons, Howard Lee Newton Jr. of Rosemount, Earl Langdon Newton of Portsmouth and Ron (Jeanette) Tipton of Cordova, TN; one daughter, Terri Tipton Curl of Columbus; one brother, Larry Newton of Portsmouth; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at the ADKINS-BRANT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth, with Pastor Tom Charles officiating, and interment in Greenlawn Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be provided by James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. The family will receive friends at Adkins-Brant from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour.
