PORTSMOUTH – Jean Payton, 76, of Portsmouth, a former Clarktown resident, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Heartland of Portsmouth. Jean was born Jan. 27, 1938, in Lucasville, a daughter of the late Thomas and Lona Jenkins Pitts. She was retired from the former Portsmouth Receiving Hospital where she worked in the housekeeping department.
Jean was preceded in death Aug.1, 1992, by her husband James Lafayette Payton, whom she married in Indiana on Jan. 28, 1956. Surviving her are two daughters, Jennifer Kay (Lowell) Brigner of Clarktown and Jeanette Warner of Rubyville; a grandson, Chad Warner of Rubyville; a brother, Thomas (Delores) Pitts Jr. of St. Joseph, MI; many nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Ileen Pitts of West Portsmouth. Jean was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Jeff Warner; two brothers, Robert and Everett Pitts; and four sisters, Doris Pitts, Louise Cole, Marjorie Osborn and Irene McGue.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Candy Run Cemetery with Rev. Randall Phipps officiating.
