PORTSMOUTH – Patricia Ann Lucas, 78, of Portsmouth, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at SOMC Hospice. Pat was born on April 20, 1935, in Oak Hill, WV, the daughter of the late Heber H. and Juanita Thompson Legg. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Jack Lucas; one son, Michael S. Lucas; and one brother, Alton Legg.

Pat retired from a 27-year teaching career at Portsmouth High School in 1996. In addition to her success as an effective and innovative teacher, she was a skilled seamstress creating clothing and decorative items. She was a knowledgeable plant and flower grower and arranger who could identify and culture hundreds of plants, some of which she used in production of wonderful dry flower portraits. After retiring, she returned to her early love of playing the guitar and singing in her small string band at home and in various venues. There, her remarkable memory for songs and poetry was impressive. Pat enjoyed her life and launched into the new and different with joy and enthusiasm. She will be remembered and missed by all with whom she shared her life.

Pat is survived by her husband, James Rowland of Portsmouth; one son, Dr. Jonathan Lucas of Wheelersburg; two daughters, Dr. Melissa Lucas of Lakeside Park, KY, and Melinda Cavender of Brandon, FL; one brother, Hubert H. Legg of San Antonio, TX; one sister, Pamela Faulkner of Beckley, WV; and three grandchildren, Tara Cavender of Brandon, FL, Sidney Lucas and Leo Weisberger, both of Lakeside Park, KY.

Interment was held at Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg, under the direction of the ADKINS-BRANT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to SOMC Hospice for their great care. Condolences may be sent to the family at
