Alma M. Payton, 89, of Sciotoville, died Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Heartland of Portsmouth. Born on April 5, 1924, in Portsmouth, she was a daughter of the late Roscoe and Myrtle Bloomfield Evans and a graduate of Wheelersburg High School. She was Mother of the Year in 1961 in Portsmouth, an avid bowler, and was a member of the Daughters of America. Alma was a judge with the election board for over 30 years, and a very proud member of the Berean Baptist Church.
Also preceding her in death were her husband, Robert Payton; a grandson, David Payton Jr.; two brothers, Clarence and David Evans; and two sisters, Irene Gammon and Helen Strickland.
Surviving are two sons, Robert (Sue) Payton of Elida and David Payton of Slocum Station; a daughter, Pamela (Kent) Lanham of Lexington, KY; two sisters, Peggy Whitehouse of Tonganoxie, KS, and Patty Thompson of Sciotoville; 10 grandchildren, Doug, Suzie, Robin, Chris, Audra, Sara, Gidget, Jackie, Kenton and Caroline; 17 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Berean Baptist Church with Pastor Tim Goodwin officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE from 4 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
