WEST PORTSMOUTH-Emma Louise Rickman of West Portsmouth, OH died on Sunday, May 4, 2014 in Charleston, WV. She was born on May 26, 1927 to the late Ralph and Otley Rapp. She was married to her husband, Merrill Rickman, by the late Rev. Carl Butterbaugh on May 15, 1954.
Emma was a member of the 1945 graduating class from Washington High School in West Portsmouth. She was employed by the late Dr. William Singleton, Sears, Martings Department Store, and part time at the Board of Education. She was also a co-owner of the Pittsburgh Paint Company's former Portsmouth store. For every $100 that she made, she would spend $110 on those that she loved.
She was a member of Old Town United Methodist Church in West Portsmouth and a member of the Upper Room Club. She was a Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, Sunday School and Bible School teacher for many years.
In addition to her parents, Emma was preceded in death by a sister, Sabrina Bernthold.
Emma is survived by her loving husband of almost 60 years, Merrill Rickman; daughter and son-in-law, Dee and Ross Johnson, of Charleston, WV; son, Rick Rickman, of West Portsmouth; two grandsons whom she loved dearly, Taylor and Will Johnson, of Charleston; sister, Avenelle Sayre, of West Portsmouth; brother and sister-in-law Ralph Jr. and Betty Rapp of McDermott, OH; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Frank Shepherd, of McDermott; sister, Carolyn Rutledge, of Piketon, OH, brother-law Robert Rickman and wife Barbara of Portsmouth; brother-law Jack Rickman and wife Joyce of Sumter, SC; and sister-in law Eileen Selvage and husband Randy of Colorado. Emma is also survived by several nieces and nephews as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Emma's family and friends meant the world to her and they will dearly miss her.
Funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Old Town United Methodist Church, with Rev. Gary Hopkins and Rick Clark officiating. Interment will be at Scioto Burial Park, McDermott, OH. Friends may call from 6:00-8:00pm on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth.
