CLARENCE LEE "BENNY" BENDER
Clarence Lee "Benny" Bender, 74, of Lucasville, died Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Springfield Regional Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 18, 1939 in Portsmouth, a son of the late Clarence Stewart and Earline Roberts Bender.
Benny was a retired Social Studies and Drivers Education teacher for the Valley Local School District with 33 years of service. He was a 1958 Clay High School graduate, received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Ohio University, and his Masters in Administration from Marshall University. He was a member of the Valley Teachers Association, Ohio Education Association, National Education Association, and was a US Air Force veteran.
Along with being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Benny enjoyed spending time with his family and attending his grandkids sporting events and other activities. Benny was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan and enjoyed watching classic movies and westerns. "Mr. Bender" truly enjoyed being an educator in and out of the classroom.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Doss Bender, whom he married June 25, 1972 in Lucasville; two sons, Clarence Alan (Melanie) Bender of Springfield, and Stewart Bender of Columbus; one daughter Terri Skaggs of Lucasville; 10 grandchildren; one sister, Arnetta Sanders of New Boston; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Gary Bender.
Graveside services will be conducted at noon, Friday, Aug. 1, 2014 in Scioto Burial Park with Andy Day officiating. Military rites will be performed by the William A. Baker and James F. Irwin Posts of the American Legion. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the McKinley Funeral Home in Lucasville.
