Howard Michael "Mike" Wellman, 68

Howard Michael "Mike" Wellman, 68, of West Portsmouth, died Monday, August 5, 2013, at Southern Ohio Medical Center.

Mike was born March 3, 1945, in Portsmouth, to the late Montiville and Anna K. Wolff Wellman.

Mike was a 1963 graduate of Portsmouth West High School, worked for Boone Coleman Construction Co., was retired from Laborers Local 83 and was a former softball coach for West Portsmouth Little League. He was a member of Laborers Local 83 Retirees, National Rifle Association, National Wild Turkey Federation, Lazy S Hunt Club, United Commercial Travelers, and was a former member of the Portsmouth Area Male Chorus. Mike was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical and Reformed Church (UCC), Portsmouth.

Mike is survived by his wife, Diana Litz Wellman, whom he married July, 19, 1964; two daughters, Jodi Lynn (Eric) Sparks of West Portsmouth and Jenifer Lu (Chris) Arnett of McDermott; one brother, John "Pete" (Sandy) Wellman of Blanchester, Ohio; one sister, Anna K. (Mike) Putlack of Lebanon, Ohio; and seven grandchildren, Justin Wiget, Emily Sparks, Julia Wiget, Andy Sparks, Adam Arnett, Nate Arnett, and George Arnett.

Mike, Poppy to his grandchildren, was the "rock" of his family. He was always willing to help anyone who needed it and always had a joke or story for every situation. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend who will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 10, 2013, at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth, with the Rev. Peter Michael officiating and interment in Scioto Burial Park. Friends may call the funeral home from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
