Obituary Condolences

Williams, Burnetta Kay 65, of Gary, Indiana, transitioned Wednesday, March 19, 2014. She was born to the late Bill and Hattie Mae White (Brooks), September 3, 1948 in Batesville, Mississippi. Burnetta (affectionately known as Kay to most friends and family), graduated from Froebel High School in Gary and received a BS in History from Indiana University. She married Sammie D. Williams, Jr. in 1973, and they lived together in Gary, Indiana, celebrating their 40th Wedding Anniversary in December 2013. Burnetta was a retired Auditor with the Internal Revenue Service with over 26 years of service. She loved accounting, history and her community. She was a member of the local NAACP Chapter, United Council of Negro Women, Gary Ground Works, Friends of the Gary Public Library and neighborhood block club. Burnetta was a very active member of Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church in Gary for nearly 30 decades. She served as Lay Speaker, Vacation Bible School Coordinator and Youth Ministry Assistant in addition to other work positions in the church. She was preceded in death by two aunts, Riley and Gene Brassell. Burnetta is survived by her husband, Sammie; two daughters, Heather (Williams) Hiller and Jasmine (Williams) Garrett; six grandchildren, Raylan and Symone Baxter, Kendall and Chelsea Garrett; aunts and uncles whom she loved as siblings, Lorene Mitchell, Maureen Cohran, Laverne Freeman, Patricia; and a host of beloved cousins, family and close friends. Visitation 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 28th at Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church in Gary with Funeral Services immediately following at 11:00 a.m., 2600 W. 5th Avenue, Rev. Vera Johnson officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery.
