After leaving Mississippi, he worked at DuSable High School in Chicago, Illinois before moving to Gary, Indiana. While a resident of Gary, he taught at Edison High School and West Side High School. He retired from the Gary Community School Corporation in June of 1989 and continued to teach math courses part-time at Ivy Tech. In his spare time, Eli loved to plant vegetables in his garden and watch sports and the news on television. He had a rich and varied social life which included active membership in Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and the Jacksonian Club of Gary. Also, he was an active volunteer serving as an adult leader in the Boy Scouts of America and holding various leadership positions at both Trinity Lutheran Church and St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
