Hairston, Mother Marilyn Ashe Made her advent into the context of time. A life so well lived that her summons came on Monday, March 3, 2014 in the comfort of her home. She accepted salvation's redemption story. Marilyn believed in education, graduating from Roosevelt High School with honors. She received her Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Roosevelt University, Master of Science Degree in Counseling and a Certificate in Elementary Education from Indiana University. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta and the Urban League. She started her teaching career at Froebel High School as a music teacher, being one of seven black teachers. She then moved her career to West Side High School serving as a Guidance Counselor for 35 years. She served Gary Community Schools for 46 years. She was united in holy matrimony to The Late Rev. Dr. Norman L. Hairston, Sr. In 1964 she became the Lady of Zion Progressive Baptist Church and Minister of Music. Marilyn united with the St. John Baptist Church and Emmanuel Baptist Church and returned her membership back to Zion Progressive Cathedral International to be back with her son. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years. Marilyn leaves to cherish her legacy, son, Bishop Norman J. (Kimberly) Hairston II; special cousin, Julia (Samuel) Sims and Virginia Sims; grandchildren, NaQuita Jenae, Bufus Lynn, Faith Antionette and Norman J. III and Iraca Kelli; three Godchildren, Joi Lynn (George) Brown of Wisconsin, Robin (Nathaniel) Shannon and James Kirklen, of Gary; special friends, Grace Dumas, Cheryl James, and Suzette Raggs. Viewing starting at 12:00 on Friday, March 14, 2014. Victory Commemoration at 6:00p.m. Zion Progressive, 1169 Connecticut Street. Celebration Service Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 10:00a.m. Galilee Baptist Church, 1548 Madison Street. Arrangements entrusted to Manuel Memorial Funeral Home.
