Samsel, Sidney James "Jim" 82, passed away on September 14, 2013 in Riverside, California with his devoted wife, Dorothy, at his side. James was born October 21, 1930, 818 Tennessee Street, Michigan City, Indiana, to Stanley John and Ruth (Bennett-Story) Samsel. In August 1953 Jim married Rosemary Wilson; they had three children. Later, being a widower, Jim married Dorothy Hudak in December of 1984. While growing up, he traveled across the country following his father's work. He went to schools in Indiana, Washington and California. James earned his High School Degree, G.E.D, December 1970, Michigan City Area Schools; his Bachelor of Arts, August 1982, Thomas A. Edison College, Trenton, New Jersey; a Certificate in Labor Relations, July 1965, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Illinois; and a Certificate in Religious Studies, December 1983, Calumet College, Hammond, Indiana. James retired from United States Steel Corporation, Gary, Indiana after working there for 33 years as an electrician (motor inspector). His lifetime numerous and sundry jobs include: paperboy, Liberty Magazine sales, photographer (door to door baby pictures) salesman, Fuller brush man, stoop farm laborer, railroad boxcar assembler, farm equipment assembler, seam and spot welder, boiler and air-conditioner assembler, Southern Pacific Railroad equipment repairman, copy boy at Oakland Tribune, Co., gas station attendant, building maintenance man, school bus driver, outside man for credit bureau, credit collector for Sears-Roebuck, insurance inspector, and "moonlighting" wiring jobs for residential and commercial clients. Jim was an avid reader and passionate debater. Jim is survived by his beloved wife Dorothy; daughter Karin (William) Nowatzke, Michigan City, IN; sons Kris Samsel, Westborough, MA, and Keith (Julie) Samsel, St. Petersburg, FL; sister Naomi (Peter) Yepez, Tucson, AZ; brother David (Jeanne) Samsel, Carson City, NV; half-sister Norma (Robert) Cowgill, Springfield, MO; and his step-children; Tony (Estelle) Betz, Becky (Carl) Johnson, Connie (Jim) Wright, Annette Betz, Jennifer (Tony Tokarz) Betz. Also his grandchildren: Derick (Ann) Helton, Adam Samsel, Amie, Emilie, Kaitlyn, Melanie, Michael, Daniel, Erin Lams, James (Serena) Wright, Eric, Nathaniel and Kathryn; his great-grandchildren: Kristin and Zachary Helton, Adam Samsel, Jr., and Madeline Lams. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosemary; his father, Stanley John Samsel; his mother, Ruth Marie (Bennett-Story) Samsel; his half-brothers, Eugene Robertson and Robert Robertson; his half-sisters, Bertha Rice and Anne Mozzocco.
