James Arthur Galloway, 84, passed away at his home in Chester, Iowa, on Friday, Oct. 25, 2013.

James was born Aug. 4, 1929, in rural Fillmore County, the son of James and Florence (Lawson) Galloway along with two sisters. He served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954 aboard the U.S.S. Isherwood, with extended tours in the Mediterranean Sea. On Aug. 23, 1958, he was united in marriage to Georgann Myli at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union two daughters were born. Sandra (Greg) Rollins and Darla (Gordon) Gragert.

James operated Jim's Milling Service in Chester, Iowa, from 1958 to 1972. He owned several feed mills that serviced several farms in the area. He also sold Geerlings Feed at this time. In 1972, he bought a farm in Chester and farmed until 2003. He also was a partner with wife, Georgann in owning and operating Georgann's Cafe in Chester, and later in the Upper Iowa Inn also in Chester. Later, James was also employed at SMI Company in Chester and Cresco, Iowa.

James served on the Chester Town Council, the Chester Fire Department and was a member of the Lime Springs American Legion. He enjoyed tractors and all old farm machinery. He hosted several Threshing Bee celebrations on his farm in Chester that were attended by many from the area. James loved his family and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He especially enjoyed giving his grandchildren tractor rides, keeping them supplied with lots of toy farm machinery. He loved watching them play ball, and watching his youngest grandson in tractor pulls, using some of his old machinery. He was very proud of his great-grandchildren and enjoyed teasing them.

He is survived by his wife, Georgann; daughters, Sandra (Greg) Rollins, Lake City and Darla (Gordon) Gragert of Chester, Iowa; grandchildren, James (Anna) Rollins, Chanhassen and James Gragert and friend, Hallie O'Brien of Cresco, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Ellie, Jace and Olivia Rollins all of Chanhassen; a sister, Marie Brady of Rochester; and many nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Zane Rollins, and a sister, Dorothy Peter.

James was loved deeply by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
