Chester Shelby Bahr

Chester Shelby Bahr, 86, of Rochester, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2013. 

Chester Shelby Bahr, 86, of Rochester, was born on June 20, 1927, in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of Frank and Mary Bahr. He graduated from North Division High School where he was a center on the football team and named All City. He went on to the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and graduated with a degree in engineering. He married Beatrice Hiller in 1948 and they had four sons. The Bahr family moved to Rochester in 1962 to open another location of Hiller Stores which was founded by David Hiller in 1937. 

He was very active in the B'nai Israel Synagogue and served as president for many terms. He was on many boards and was a community leader.

He is preceded in death by son, Andrew; great-granddaughter, Rachel Holland; daughter-in-law, Margaret Irick Bahr; partner of Hal Bahr, Donald Walker.

Chet is survived by wife, Beatrice; sons, David (Maureen Fogarty) Bahr, Michael Bahr (partner, Morrie Hartman) and Hal Bahr; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Howard Barr, Diane Lilly, Eileen Chudnow and Sharon Pincus.

Chet was an avid duplicate bridge player; having attained his life master many years ago. Chet and Bea won several national tournaments. Chet was a petty officer in the Navy during World War II.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, Sept. 11, at noon at B'Nai Israel Synagogue, 150 Seventh Ave. S.W. in Rochester. Burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

Shiva will be at Bea and Chet's home, 5941 Glencroft Lane S.W. in Rochester, Wednesday evening, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. and Thursday evening, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and share memories of Chester.

Memorials preferred to B'nai Israel Synagogue or donor's favorite charity.
