Harry D. Geerdes

The memorial service for Harry D. Geerdes, 87, of Stewartville, will be at 2 p.m. on Monday (Dec. 30, 2013) at the Stewartville Care Center Chapel, with the Rev. Emily Carson officiating. Mr. Geerdes died on Thursday (Dec. 26, 2013) of natural causes at the Stewartville Care Center.

Harry Duane Geerdes was born on April 20, 1926, in Stewartville, to William and Winnie (Converse) Geerdes. He grew up on the family farm and attended rural school. He farmed with his family until entering the U.S. Army in 1954, serving until 1956. Following his discharge, he returned to rural Stewartville and farmed. Harry was married on June 20, 1959, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, to Lorraine "Lori" Mathews. They made their home in Stewartville, where they raised their family. Harry was a lifelong farmer until his retirement. Lori had a long career as an accountant with the A.P. Herold Accounting firm in Rochester. Harry was a longtime member of the Stewartville American Legion Post 164. He enjoyed farming, raising and caring for animals, including his dogs, in particular - Nicky. He read the local newspapers front to back, keeping up on current events, and always looked forward to time spent with family, especially his grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

Harry is survived by his wife, Lori; daughter, Linda (Steven) Kath, of Seattle, Wash.; daughter-in-law, Patricia Geerdes, of Stewartville; four granddaughters, Angela Kath, Rebecca Kath, Nikki Geerdes and Brittany Geerdes; great-granddaughter, Payten; and two sisters, Betty Geerdes, of Stewartville, and Helen Gifford, of Marcell, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, David.

Friends may call an hour prior to the service on Monday afternoon at the Stewartville Care Center Chapel. A private family burial will take place at a later date in High Forest Cemetery in High Forest.
