Kenneth O. Makinen

Kenneth O. Makinen, 83, of Fort Collins, Colo., formerly of Rochester, passed away on May 24, 2014.

Ken graduated from the local public school system and junior college in Eveleth. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota, followed by a Master of Science degree from the University of South Dakota and culminating with a PhD degree from Colorado State University.

Ken started his lifetime teaching career at the high school level in Longview, Wash., before returning to Minnesota for a long-tenured career at Rochester Community College, where he taught until his retirement in 1991. While at RCC, he was instrumental in developing and coordinating the Allied Health programs offered in conjunction with the Mayo Clinic.

In retirement, Ken became an avid and accomplished wood carver. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Collins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; and a son, Bruce.

He is survived by a son, Scott (Jeni), and a granddaughter, Claire, all of Fort Collins; and two cousins, Harold and Allan Schultz.

Cremation has taken place, and interment in Eveleth will occur at a later date.
