Maynard Ross "Spike" Adams

Maynard "Spike" Ross Adams, 85, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at his home.

He was born Dec. 26, 1927, to Charles and Mary (Cook) Adams in Minneapolis. He moved with his family to Red Wing in 1934, where he attended school. Maynard entered the U.S. Navy in 1946, and was honorably discharged after serving for two years. He was employed by the Chicago Great Western and the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 40 years, retiring in 1985. He married Elaine Swanson on Sept. 25, 1948, at St. John's Lutheran Church, where he was a member.

He was an active volunteer of the American Cancer Society and the Mississippi Shuffle. He and Elaine were co-chairs for the Shuffle in 1999. He was also a member of the Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54. He enjoyed being in the outdoors, hunting and after retiring, tinkering in the garage and visiting with his neighbors.

He is survived by his two sons, Robert (Katherine) and Randy (Stacey) all of Red Wing; one daughter, Jolene (John Kellogg) Borland of St. Paul; two grandsons, Rick and Aaron Borland of St. Paul; two granddaughters, Cara Adams and Christine (Karl) Bakke of Red Wing; and two great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Henry Bakke.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; parents; brother, Robert Adams and sister, Katherine Adams.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Red Wing, with the Rev. Todd Engel presiding. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, with a legion prayer service at 4 p.m. at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing.

Memorials are preferred to St. John's Lutheran School or the American Cancer Society.
