John Henry Beaumier, MD, 85, passed away peacefully after a long and courageous battle with heart disease in Duluth, Minn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Beaumier and his son, Paul McKenna Beaumier. He is survived by his children, Jack G. Beaumier, Anne Beaumier Ritz, Patrick J. Beaumier, MD, Michael J. Beaumier, Matthew H. Beaumier, JD, Fr. Casey C. Beaumier, SJ, Colin W. Beaumier and Katie Beaumier Ryan. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, Madeline, Devin, Zoe, David, Michaela, Evan, Julia, Nicholas, Henry, Claire, Abby, Maggie and John.
John was born on Aug. 29, 1931 in Escanaba Mich. He was the youngest child of Henry Joseph Beaumier and Lillian Helen Belanger Beaumier's six children.
John attended Northern Michigan University from 1950 to 1954 where he majored in Chemistry and played linebacker for the football team. After graduating from college John enrolled at the Marquette University School of Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1958. While in medical school John was enrolled in the Navy's Ensign Program. He completed his internship and worked as a physician for the U.S. Navy until 1962. His naval career included assignments as a medical doctor at naval hospitals in New London, Conn.; Portsmouth, Va.; the Island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea; the USS Intrepid and the Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Illinois. It was during this period that John married his wife of 58 years, Mary Jane McKenna. The two were wed on July 2, 1958.
After fulfilling his military obligation, John successfully completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He would spend the next 35 years as a highly respected orthopedic surgeon in Marshfield, Wis.; Grand Forks, N.D., and Rochester where he finished his career as a staff physician for the Department of Orthopedics at the Mayo Clinic.
During his decades long career he would impact the lives of many patients and their families, earning their respect as well as the respect of his physician and nurse colleagues. Before his career was over he would also lead five overseas medical missions, providing orthopedic surgical care and equipment to the impoverished people of Bangladesh. He also took opportunity during these missions to teach and instruct young Bangladeshi doctors the orthopedic skills necessary to care for their own people. His dedication and humble demeanor would allow him to positively impact the lives of so many people in so many ways. He will truly be missed by those who knew him well.

So very sorry to hear about John. He was a good friend of Sig Petersen who lived just a short way down the beach and Sig would take care of the cat whenever needed. Always enjoyed his and his wife's company when they came to Marquette....my prayers are with the family. Yvonne Dorais

I'm sorry for Doctor Beaumier's passing. My heartfelt condolences are shared with your family.

I met Doctor Beaumier in July 1978. He looked after me for three months in Grand Forks after a car accident. I was 15 years old. He'd come in for daily rounds and ask "How's it going today Tiger?" I had to stay awake while he removed a pin from my knee, asking several times, "I'm not hurting you? Am I Tiger?" I'm sure he had names for all of his young patients, but it's hard to think of him without porting back to those conversations.

His compassion and demeanor left a life-long impression on me. Almost forty years later, I can't help but write this through tears. I stand with you as you remember Doctor Beaumier with prayers and thankfulness.
