James K. Wellvang, 69, of Minneapolis, (formerly Arlington, Texas), died Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Elaine Wellvang.

James is survived by his father, Phillip Wellvang, of Rochester; brother, Steven (Melinda), of Minneapolis; nephews, Thomas, Daniel and Michael Wellvang; and family and friends around the world.

After graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1966, Jim served in Kenya in one of the early classes of the Peace Corps, where he developed an interest in East Africa. He earned a master's degree in library science from the University of Minnesota, working afterward in Kampala, Uganda (Makerere University) and Kingston, Jamaica (University of the West Indies). After earning a certificate in preservation/conservation from Columbia University, he worked for more than 20 years at the University of Texas at Arlington Library.

Jim loved his family and friends, his garden in Arlington, the special collections he helped preserve and art and music. He moved to The Kenwood Retirement Community in Minneapolis in 2012 and was grateful for the new friends he met and care he received. Gone too early, he will be missed.

A memorial service is being planned in Rochester later in the year.
