Irene E. Johnson, 87, of rural Wabasha, died Monday, June 9, 2014, at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Wabasha.

She was born Jan. 23, 1927, in the Town of Canton, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Herbert and Gertrude (Klammer) Schultz. Irene was a graduate of Mondovi High School. She married Orlin "Bill" Johnson Oct. 23, 1948, at Central Lutheran Church in Mondovi. The family lived in Eau Claire where Bill worked as an electrician. After his retirement in 1986, the couple moved to rural Wabasha in 1988. Bill died March 3, 2008.

Irene was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Wabasha. Her faith was extremely important to her. She enjoyed reading, watching old movies, listening to music and taking walks. She especially loved living at her home on Mississippi River and observing all it had to offer. In her younger years, she enjoyed embroidery and baking.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Mike Clark, Maple Grove, Susan Johnson, Spring Lake Park, Connie and Darrell Steinke, North Fond du Lac, Wis., and Catherine and Kevin Parks, Verona, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Alan Clark and Laura (David) Asiamah, Chelsea (Marco Fernandez) and Jon Magadance, Jared and Rebecca Steinke and Jonah and Owen Parks; one great-granddaughter, Daniela Fernandez; brother, Loris Wrobel, Mondovi, Wis.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Johnson, and one sister, Ruth Wrobel. 

Irene's family is eternally grateful for their mother's special friend and caregiver, Toni Burns of Wabasha, and the many others in the community who gave assistance to her over these past several years.

A funeral service will be held Friday, June 13, at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Wabasha, with the Rev. David Knox officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery in rural Mondovi.

Family and friends may call at the Abbott Funeral Home in Wabasha Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and at the church on Friday one hour before the service.

Memorials are preferred to Faith Lutheran Church.
