Sumner Boldt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 12, 2014.
Sumner "Bud" Lee Boldt, 85, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, July 9, 2014, surrounded by his family at Deer Crest.

He was born on May 11, 1929, in Red Wing, to Benjamin and Elda (Santelman) Boldt and attended rural school near the family farm. He became the man of the house at an early age after his father died when he was only 11, and he grew up working on the farm. On July 22, 1954, he was united in marriage to Marcine McRoberts at the First United Methodist Church in Red Wing. He worked for Red Wing Pottery until its closing, then for Bay State Milling and later ADM, where he worked in the maintenance department until he retired in 1992.

Bud and his wife were past 4-H leaders, and he also belonged to the Red Wing Bowling Association as well as the First United Methodist Church. He loved playing cards, reading, pitching horseshoes, dancing, attending his grandchildren's sporting events and working on antique tractors.

He is survived by his wife, Marcine; six children, Gordy (Sue) Boldt, Cherie (Bob) Riegelman, Connie (Jim) Bryant, Gina (Eric) Nelson, Ben (Gayle) Boldt and Beth (Rick) Heber, all of Red Wing; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings, Jesse and Lester Boldt, Verna Malnar, Jean Merriman, Marian Odman, Beatrice Wagner and Beryl Swanson-Cushing.

A celebration of Bud's life will be held at the family farm, 26299 County 21 Blvd., Red Wing, on Saturday, July 19, from 2 to 5 p.m., with a service starting at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Greg Strunk officiating. A private family burial will take place at a later date at the Hay Creek German Methodist Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to the Juvenile Diabetes Association, First United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society
