Louis Buie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 14, 2016.
Dr. Louis Arthur "Bud" Buie Jr., 88, of Edina, passed away surrounded by family May 11, 2016. Preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Louis A. Buie Sr. and Zelma Jones Buie; sister, Nancy Buie Palmer; grandson, Ian Matthew Buie; and nephew, Paul Lewis Joern.

Bud was a remarkable man who lived an exemplary life. Raised in Rochester, Minn., he graduated from Deerfield Academy, Mass., and Dartmouth College, N.H. He completed his medical school training at Dartmouth College and the University of Minnesota, culminating in an internship at Minneapolis General. His surgical fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., was interrupted by two years of service as a captain and surgeon in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. Upon his return, Bud completed his fellowship and accepted a position as assistant to the staff at Mayo Clinic, during which time he was awarded the H.K. Gray Surgical Award. In 1960, Bud, Joann and family moved to Edina, Minn., where he joined a surgical group and subsequently served as chief of staff and chief of surgery at Fairview Hospital Downtown and Fairview Southdale Hospital. Bud loved medicine, working with hospital staff and caring for patients and is remembered for his compassionate bedside manner.

Bud met his exceptional life partner when he accepted an invitation to be a dance partner at a birthday party for a friend of Joann McCue. It was, he would later proclaim, the best decision he ever made. He and Joann married five years later. True soul mates, Bud and Joann shared a commitment to family and the cultivation of friendships. They shared a love of music and theater and were generous patrons of the arts and faithful supporters of many churches. Over the years, Bud enjoyed playing piano by ear and singing in the Dartmouth Glee Club, Bach Society of Minnesota and the CPC Chancel Choir. A gifted athlete and avid sports fan, Bud loved and excelled at the game of golf — another pursuit he shared with Joann that produced many wonderful friendships at Olympic Hills and beyond (and an astounding eight holes-in-one for Bud). Together they started the first girls intramural hockey league in Edina and coached their daughters' team — a prime example of their active support of their children's and grandchildren's pursuits, whether in academics, soccer, hockey, lacrosse, music, dance or the theater.

Throughout their lives, Bud and Joann traveled extensively and, in particular, relished annual road trips to test the nation's golf courses, explore and admire national parks and visit distant family and friends. Their cabin on Camp Lake was a home away from home where family and friends gathered to enjoy nature and togetherness.

Bud is survived by the love of his life and devoted wife of 65 years, Joann McCue Buie; children, Brad (Susie) Buie, Steve (Elizabeth) Buie, Marsha (Randy) Brandt, Paula (Jenn Kokes) Buie, Tom (Allison) Buie; grandchildren, Katie (Chris) Woodard, Juliana Brandt, Marissa, Corinne and Isabel Buie, Walker and Mary Buie; great-grandchild, Elle Woodard; sister-in-law, Arlene (Bill) Joern Peter; nephews and nieces, Keith (Trish) Palmer, Anne (Bodie) Tribe, Tracy (Lee) Muckey, Mark (Emily) Joern, Paul Joern's wife Jenn Zeiss; many other dear relatives and friends.

There are not enough words to describe the tremendous love we feel for Bud, the enormous loss we feel in his absence and the amazing legacy he leaves to all who knew him. Bud, we are so glad you were ours; thank you for being so terrific. Celebration of Life is Friday, May 20, at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior and lunch reception following at Shepherd of the Valley Church, 12650 Johnny Cake Ridge Road, Apple Valley. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Fairview Foundation, Doctors Without Borders or SOTV Church Organ Fund.
