Barry Scanlon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 16, 2016.
Barry Francis Scanlon was born in Rochester on Oct. 24, 1951, the third of five children of Dr. Paul W. and Jane M. Scanlon. He died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016, in Gainesville, Fla., of injuries from a motor vehicle accident.

He grew up in Rochester and attended Mayo High School. He enjoyed amateur theater and music. He left high school early to enroll at the University of Minnesota, from which he graduated summa cum laude with a major in philosophy in 1973. He joined the second class of Mayo Medical School and received his MD degree in 1977. He served two years as a resident at Mayo Clinic before completing his residency in psychiatry at Emory University in 1980. He served one additional year as chief resident before beginning his solo practice of psychiatry in Atlanta, which he maintained to the present. He was beloved and admired by his patients.

A superb diagnostician, he was unafraid to question conventional wisdom. He was always an advocate for the underserved. He maintained board certification and a sub-specialty practice in forensic psychiatry, advocating for justice for prisoners with mental illness. He was supported throughout his career by his devoted office manager and close friend, Julie Howell, and her husband, the Rev. Dr. Jim Howell.

Barry was married in 1976 and divorced 10 years later. He had two adult sons, to whom he was a devoted and attentive father.

In addition to spending time with his sons and vacations with family, Barry loved cooking, music and cinema, as well as riding his motorcycle through the mountains of north Georgia and adjacent states. He loved repartee, had a wry sense of humor, and fierce political and social opinions. Barry survived a critical illness earlier this year and was recovering with the support of his family. Our hearts are broken by this tragedy.

Barry is survived by his sons, Alexander (Claudia Garcia) Scanlon and Collin Gumprecht; his mother, Jane Scanlon; his sister, Dr. Patricia (Harrison) Bloom; his brother Dr. Paul D. (Maggie) Scanlon; two nieces; two nephews; a grand-nephew; and three grand-nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father, his brother, Michael, and his sister, Barbara.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Chapel of Charter House in Rochester.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rochester Civic Theater or to Channel One Food Shelf, both in Rochester, or the Atlanta Humane Society in Atlanta.

I send my deepest condolences to Dr. Barry Scanlon's family , friends, and former patients regarding his unexpected death. I was a Registered Nurse who had the privilege of working with him for 9 years at West Paces Hospital in Atlanta.
He was a quiet, but special person. We connected
through those years as colleagues, and friends with a special effort on my part. I missed him after West Paces closed.
I know he is deeply missed.

My husband and I have known Dr. Scanlon for 20 years as his patients. We considered him a good friend and an excellent doctor. He saved my husband's life a few years ago when he had a major psychotic break and had become a very different person than I knew. My husband was being treated by another doctor who had him on entirely the wrong medicine which caused a severe chemical imbalance. Dr. Scanlon recognized the problem right away and his excellent treatment brought my husband back to me. We will miss him greatly.

My sincere sympathy to his family and friends and those who were blessed to have had him as their doctor. There are certain people in your youth who you know are brilliant and beautiful inside and out and Barry was one of those people.

Dr. Scanlon saved my life when I thought there was no more life to be saved. The world has lost a wonderful person who helped many. If I am able to help just one person as much as he helped me, I will consider my life well-lived.

Dear Dr. Scanlon, How sad to tell you this posthumously. You are the best doctor, friend, and counselor in the entire world. I somehow, very luckily, stumbled upon your name in a list of physicians in Atlanta that my insurance accepted, maybe 10 years ago. Over the years I came to depend upon your advice, your clarity, and your medical expertise to help me be the person that you always encouraged me to be. I will miss you so much, but I am honored to have had you as my doctor for so many years. Julie, thank you for always being so helpful in securing appointments and for being such a fantastic support to Dr. Scanlon's patients.

Dr Scanlon was my treating physician for many years. I was shocked to hear of his death after he had survived such a perilous illness. I will miss him. It was a great pleasure to me to crack him up during a session - notably hard to do but I enjoyed his laugh. My prayers are with his family and with his gracious office assistant, Julie. I will not be able to replace him in my life.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Scanlon at Dekalb Medical as a behavioral health counselor. The patients were his first concern ; he never let insurance dictate treatment or length of stay. I remember his kindness when he brought a birthday cake into the inpatient unit for a patient that had no family. God rest your soul Dr. Scanlon.

Dr. Scanlon, you are the only doctor that could keep me well enough to half way function. I thank you for all you have done for my family and myself. You will be missed very much in my world. I will miss that smile. Go rest in peace, until we meet again. Prayers to all the family that are left to grieve. May the Lord hold you all extra tight right now.

Dr. Scanlon, I thought the world of you. The best in the Psychiatry field and in the world as far as I am concerned. My heart breaks for your sons and their mom and Julie and everyone's life you touched. I am so honored to have had you as a Doctor. NO ONE will ever top you. You knew my whole life story and still accepted me, flaws and all. You are a genius as well. I sure am going to miss you. You certainly made a mark in my life. I hope to see you one day in Heaven.

A writer who suddenly has no words when it matters. Not good. Okay... let's give this a shot:
For eight years, you saved my sense of *self* more times than you can know, from the right meds to the right quip.
When I went elsewhere, after your earlier medical leave, it became even more apparent how lucky I was to have found you. Integrity, professionalism, expertise and humor. A rare combination. It was such a relief to have you back, and to see you last month. When I heard from Julie I couldn't, and still can't, take this in.
And speaking of Julie, it's lovely that she was mentioned in the notice. She deserves that recognition as a kind, calm, caring assistant. When you see her sweet face, you can't help but smile and feel better... even after battling ATL traffic.
My heart and thought and prayers are with your family, Julie, and all of your patients, who are also in mourning. God bless you, Dr. Scanlon. It was always a pleasure to be in your company.

Knowing Barry most of my life I can truely say he was a great example of what a human should be.He flew in from Atlanta to attend my wedding in Stillwater,Mn without telling me and said it wouldn't be a surprise if he had. I will never forget that. He was a good friend.

I'm so happy to have been Dr. Scanlon's patient for well over a decade and have been devastated by his untimely passing. It was such great fun to see him in June well on his way to recovery, and to know he was glad to be back with his patients. He was deeply touched by those who took the time to send cards and gifts.

I'm so sorry for your loss and pray that you will be sustained by many sweet memories.

So sorry for your loss. Dr Scanlon was an A1 psychiatrist. I would frequently comment that if a friend or family or even myself needed a psychiatrist Dr Scanlon would be the one. M.Pierre,Rn
