Nancy Moffatt Obituary

Rev. Nancy Lee Moffatt

Rev. Nancy Lee Moffatt, nee Mueller, age 68 , died September 4, 2013 from ovarian cancer. She is survived by her husband John, whom she married on June 8, 1968, their son John Frederick, his wife Alyssa, and their son Oliver, her brother Roger, two nieces and two nephews.

Nancy grew up on a farm in southern Illinois where she developed her life-long love of cats and dogs. At age 10 her dad was killed in a tractor accident. Her family moved to a near by town where she became active in 4-H and volunteered at the nursing home, playing cards with the residents. After high school, she graduated from Southern Illinois University- Carbondale. She taught junior high school but later discovered that she was most energized by teaching small groups of adults. She loved reading and learning, completing graduate degrees in education, counseling, and divinity. She enjoyed traveling, chocolate, spending time with friends and her immediate family, working on family history, doing jig saw puzzles, watching movies, and solving crossword puzzles. Her greatest joy was spending time with her young grandson, Oliver.

For almost 25 years, Nancy and her family were members of St Paul's United Methodist Church (UMC) at Stevens Point where she served in nearly every lay capacity. Her strong commitment to the active role of laity in the church became a focus when she answered a call to ordained ministry. In 2008 she retired after having served as a District Superintendent of the Wisconsin UMC.

People often commented on her pleasant smile, her sparkling eyes, and how easy she was to talk with- saying that they felt they had known her forever. She will be missed by many people with whom she worked, whether as Director of Volunteer Services at St Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point, as Campus Minister at UWSP, or as pastor of Fairchild, Humbird, Amherst, Buena Vista, & Appleton: St. James UMC's. She'll also be remembered by her colleagues in the Wisconsin Annual Conference of the UMC and her many other friends and relatives as witnessed by the numerous CaringBridge.com responses and emails she received.

A Funeral Service, commemorating her life, will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 14, 2012 at St. Paul's UMC in Stevens Point. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday, September 13, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place in the Moffatt family plot, at the Poy Sippi, Wisconsin Cemetery, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Nancy's name to- Feed My People in Eau Claire, WI; the Wisconsin United Methodist Foundation Fund for Laity Education in Sun Prairie, WI; or St. Joseph's Hospital Home Hospice, Chippewa Falls, WI. John, My sincere sypmathies on the passing of Nancy. How well I remember her from the Newman Center and her commitment to her profession. I also recall speaker to one of her classes in Appleton on oral history. And how could I forget the vital role she played in the removal of a certain pastor at Newman. She was a very fine human being and contributed much to humanity in her lifetime. I would be present at her service but I am in the UK at the present with Molly and won't return until early next year. I hope you are doing well and please drop me a line if you get a chance. Warm regards, Bob Wolensky
