Edward Sullivan

Sullivan, Edward J. "Red"

Edward James Sullivan passed away on March 6, 2014, at the age of 89. He was born on October 17, 1924 to James Peter Sullivan and Emily B. Brahan, the third of four children. He graduated from New London High School in the class of 1942.

Ed spent his life carrying on the legacy of the family's Town of Hortonia homestead, established in 1917. He was a life-long dairy farmer until his retirement in the late 1980s. This afforded him the opportunity to travel to his ancestral Ireland and to visit family elsewhere in the US, as well as to explore other interests like making maple syrup. Ed was also an avid card player. He was a man devoted to his family, rarely missing a Sullivan gathering, and bringing with him his ever-cheerful demeanor and amazingly-sharp memory. Ed was an active member of both Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, New London, and the Knights of Columbus. He would have continued on in this contented way indefinitely if not for the decline of his health. The family wishes to acknowledge the selfless care and support given to him in his last few years by his sister-in-law, Pat Sullivan. Ed's family would also like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Kindred Hearts in New London for helping him adjust to his new home.

Ed, or Uncle Red, as he was fondly known, is survived by his nieces and nephews: Don Sullivan, Ellen (Jeff) Wied, Kathy Sullivan, Jim (Sandy) Sullivan, Bill (Kim) Sullivan, Patty (Gary) Williams, Peg (George) Connor, Jim (Kimberly) Roets and Mary (Dan) Lanehan; and his special friend, Rosella Gitter.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Rita Roets; and brothers, Clair and Garrett.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, New London, with Fr. Arul Joseph Irudamoney officiating. Family and friends may call directly at church Tuesday afternoon from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will in the parish cemetery.
